Karl Marx analysis of an evolving Capitalism into "Communism" was misunderstood by Mao in China and Lenin in the Soviet Union because Marx described the natural process requiring a fully developed Capitalist Society, that could not jump from Feudalism into Communism avoiding the Capitalist necessary step of applying Capitalist principles to their current economy in order to achieve real Communism. It seems the Communist Party in China understands this and has made a conscious decision to apply Capitalist principles to their current economy in order to achieve real Communism eventually.
However, the question still remains, and requires more analysis, as to why the Soviet and Chinese Communist Systems developed such a rigid, bureaucratic form that denied a lot of the positive qualities of a society working together unifying its energy in one direction? Because while suffering that rigidity, the amazing strides achieved by the Soviet Union in Space and the fast changes of China in its "long March", and later with the Free Market changes brought in by Deng Shiao Ping have transformed China into the second biggest economy in the world in such a short time, after having been raped, robbed and mistreated by Western powers for decades.
The "British Empire" is famous for the "Opium War" they actually did by forcing drugs into the Chinese population to weaken it, and today ironically it's happening in much of the Western societies suffering from a wide drug addiction problem.
Which is an interesting corollary to the Western past of Colonization, thefts and abuse in its history. No wonder the US and Europe, the so-called "Free World" is nothing but a bunch of self-congratulating thieves benefiting from all what they have stolen from the rest of societies on Planet Earth. They called themselves "The First World".
Given the fact machines are to be producing most of what human consumers require, and the critical necessity of purchasing consumer goods for the economic system to be sustained (since machines do not consume) a new form of revenue has to be instituted for the masses of consumers to have purchasing power to buy them.
